The timeless beauty of Orion
Captured by Drago Salvatore from his self-built private observatory in Marzamemi, Sicily. It has a 360-degree view and he can photograph subjects at heights of 19 degrees above the horizon in all directions.
Despite limited clear nights, Drago managed to record 78 × 10-second exposures (13 minutes total), bringing out delicate color variations across the nebula.
“10-second shots were taken for a total of 13 minutes at f/4 to improve the dynamic range and preserve the central part of the nebula where the trapezium is intrinsically located. During the processing, a background extraction was performed, and the stars were compared in line. saturation. I also worked on the color range, taking care to consider the variety of colors present on this subject at different wavelengths. The Optolong LQEF 2 filter helped me a lot with this very complex work. After that, I combined the two masks, checked the saturation and brightness again, then used Pixinsight to perform a partial denoise that wasn’t too invasive.
Orion is always worth revisiting — year after year 💫
